Speech Language Therapy
Speech Language Therapists are Health Professionals who are trained to work with patients and their family/whanau who have communication and/or swallowing disorders. This includes:
- Eating, swallowing and/or communication issues as a result of a stroke, cancer, head injury or progressive neurological disorders (such as Parkinson's Disease, MND, MS)
- Paediatric feeding disorders
- Voice disorders
The service provides assessment and management for inpatients, outpatients and community patients who are referred to the Speech-Language Therapy Department.
Description
Speech-Language Therapy is part of the Allied Health Services at Timaru Hospital. Services include:
- Assessment, management and treatment of communication and swallowing disorders
- Appropriate liaison and referral to other Health Professionals
- Advocacy and support
- Education and advice to patients, family/whānau, hospital staff and community services
- Help in the selection of alternative communication systems

Referral Information
For inpatients:
- Allied Health Inpatient Referral form.
For outpatients/community
- A written referral from a GP or Health Professional.
