Palliative Care

Palliative care is an approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing the problems associated with life-threatening illness, through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification and impeccable assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, physical, psychosocial and spiritual. Palliative Care can be received at home, in hospital, in an aged care facility or at hospice.

Te Whatu Ora South Canterbury has a Palliative Care Team consisting of Clinical Nurse Specialists, Social Worker and Doctor. This team works alongside your General Practice Team, Hospital Services, District Nursing, Aged Care Facilities, Hospice South Canterbury, Community Agencies, Family/Whanau, Friends and Spiritual Advisiors.

You can access our service by contacting the above number, or you can ask to be referred by your doctor or practice nurse, your hospital specialist or nurse.  We also accept referrals from other hospitals, other health professionals and government and community agencies.
